White Paper – Impacts & Opportunities of the Retail Energy Price Cap
CMA Investigation and Reforms – October 2018
In June 2016, the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) published its final energy market reforms following a 2½ year investigation.
These reforms comprised of a series of 30 measures following in-depth investigation into competition in the energy market. OFGEM stated that the reforms will 'drive down costs by increasing competition between suppliers and helping more customers switch to better deals, whilst protecting those less able to benefit from competition'.
A Price Cap or 'safeguarding' tariff was subsequently implemented for 4m Prepayment households in April 2017 and extended in February 2018.
This White Paper looks at how the implementation of this safeguard tariff is creating difficulty for suppliers to achieve their mandated OPEX budgets and offers some compelling cost-saving solutions.
